Internet has become common goods that can be used by anyone, including children. But the Internet is often misused to search for things that do not deserve. How to protect children from internet abuse?
Internet can be a source of great learning for children, which could help her with homework, get the latest information, communicate with teachers and play interactive games. However, the Internet also can be the quickest access to the negative things that can affect the nature and behavior of children.
That is why the role of parents becomes very important to know what is seen, studied and heard by the children from the internet. Just as security problems in children, Internet usage policies and need also more attention from parents.
Internet usage is very easy for children to access sites or adult learning the wrong things. No one can guarantee 100 percent of children are protected from negative risks the internet, so it’s important to know the child’s activity at the computer and told about the risks that could result if a child is wrong to use the internet.
Many Internet service providers could block certain sites that do not fit into the computer, or can also use other programs that can monitor and track what sites are accessed.
In addition to using these ways, there are several other ways that can be used to protect children from the threat of misuse of the Internet, as quoted from Kidshealth, Thursday (5/11/2009):
1. Be a parent who understands the use of the Internet and know how to block inappropriate sites.
2. Put the computer in a public place, do not put them in a private room where the child’s parents could not see and monitor their use.
3. Ask your child’s email account so they can monitor what messages in and out.
4. Give your favorite sites of children that are easy to access.
5. Take the time to use the internet with so they can both teach children the correct use of the internet.
6. Give children internet usage time limit, so the children do not spend much time in front of the computer.
7. If the child demonstrates a behavior or a different nature than usual, ask and immediately check what the site used to be accessed by children.
If you have decided to provide internet facilities for children, then you are also required to give more attention in its use so that children do not become victims of the virtual world.
